Online Socratic Seminar (Question 1)
Fear was a large part of the book, the fear even shaped the book's theme. This fear was created, I believe, primarily because African Americans were being murdered and the people/ police at fault were not being prosecuted for their actions. This fear of even leaving the house shaped his idea of the American Dream, which was that unless you are in the white "world" you can not achieve the dream. Personally I feel that for anyone of color, a woman, or a homosexual this fear is inevitable; while for a straight white male, everything is handed to them on a silver platter.
-I agree that fear is inevitable for people of color, women, or homosexual
ReplyDelete-"unless you are in the white world, you cannot achieve the dream" this seems to be true for most of the people who are not white and I agree
How does this fear distort the author's life personally ?
ReplyDeleteWell, he wrote about the fear that was implemented on himself when he was younger and living in Baltimore, the fear of even walking outside was alone pushing him away form the American Dream.
Delete- I like the analogy you used to the American Dream of a white man to how its handed to them on a silver platter.
ReplyDelete- I agree with your third sentence but don't at the same time because you never know if a person of color achieved their dream already we all have different definitions what if becoming a stripper was their dream. But overall I agree with this statement.
I agree with the point that you made that the fear of losing your body is a fear that a lot of people of color experience. Whether you're Black, Asian, Mexican, etc that fear is hard to avoid. Blacks and Latinos alike are targets in this world, which in turn makes it hard for them to achieve something that seems like a fairy tale, the American Dream.
ReplyDeleteYour point in which you explain that fear rules the lives of African Americans is very true. One thing that I suggest you add are some references and examples from the text. It will establish much more reasoning to your claim and will also be more credible.
